Can Secret Santa Work With Odd Numbers? 3, 5, 7 People

The one case that fails: 3 people including a couple cannot draw, because both of them could only give to the third person. Any other group of 3 can, though everyone will know who drew them; if the secret doesn't matter, the gift exchange generator makes an open list for small groups instead.

How we counted, on September 27, 2026: a computer listed every possible order of the names for each group size and kept the orders where nobody gets their own name. Then, for each person, it checked whether their own match was enough to tell who drew them. The counts follow a simple rule, known as the derangement numbers (OEIS A000166): each is the group size minus one, times the two counts before it added together. For 7 people that is 6 × (265 + 44) = 1,854.

Does Secret Santa Work With 5 People?

Yes. Five people have 44 possible draws, and they come in two shapes. In 24 of them the gifts go around one loop of all five. In the other 20, three people form a loop and the other two buy for each other. Either way, nobody can work out from their own match who drew them. How to Do Secret Santa With 3 People

Three people can draw, but there are only 2 possible draws: Anna gives to Ben, Ben to Cara and Cara to Anna, or the same loop the other way around. So as soon as you see your match, you know who drew you: it's the one person you aren't buying for.

Three ways to make it work:

• Keep the gift a surprise, not the giver. Everyone knows who buys for them, but not what they'll get.
• Make it open: the gift exchange generator's Not secret list shows who gives to whom, to copy or print.
• Add a fourth person. From 4 up, nobody can work out who drew them.

Does Secret Santa Have to Be an Even Number?

No. The worry comes from thinking the draw pairs people off, two by two. It doesn't: each person draws one name, and the names link up into loops. With 6 people, the gifts might go around one loop of six, around two loops of three, or between three pairs who swap. The count of people doesn't matter to any of that, odd or even. The same holds for a Kris Kringle draw.

How Many People Do You Need for Secret Santa?

Three is the smallest group where people don't simply swap, and 4 is the smallest where it stays secret. With 2 people, each buys for the other. With 3, everyone can work out their Santa, as above. In any group of 4 or more with no rules, the person who drew you could be any of several people, so your own match gives nothing away.

Does a Secret Santa Generator Work With an Odd Number?

Yes. A generator only picks from the draws where nobody gets their own name, so it never has to start again. A hat does: for any group of 4 or more, only about 37% of the possible orders have nobody drawing their own name (for 5 people, 44 of 120), so in most hat draws someone pulls their own slip and has to draw again. With 3 people it is 2 of 6. The odds are the same for odd and even groups.

If someone drops out after the draw, the group is one smaller and still works, odd or even. The simplest fix is to remove their name, draw again, and send everyone their new link. If gifts are already bought, the person who drew the dropout can take over the dropout's match instead, unless those two had drawn each other.
