White Elephant Drinking Game: Optional Party Rules
A White Elephant drinking game adds optional drink prompts to a gift swap. Keep the gift rules separate, use any drink, and let everyone skip prompts while staying in the game.
| What happens | Optional prompt |
|---|---|
| You open a wrapped gift | Raise your drink and name one thing you like about it. |
| Your gift is stolen | Choose a toast, a sip of your own drink, or simply pass. |
| The last turn ends | Anyone who wants to can join a closing toast. |
These are our house rules, not an official rule set. Use at most one prompt per person per turn, even during a chain of steals. Water, soda, tea and alcohol-free drinks work equally well.
Start with the White Elephant gift exchange rules and draw a random turn order or print numbers. Each person brings one wrapped gift within the agreed price limit. This is a shared-pile game; Secret Santa assigns a recipient before shopping and does not normally involve stealing.
How to Play White Elephant With Drinks
- Invite adults and explain that the drink prompts are optional. Alcohol is only an option for guests of legal drinking age; nobody has to drink or explain their choice.
- Agree a gift budget, whether gag gifts are welcome, a steal limit, and whether player 1 gets a last swap. Write these down before drawing numbers.
- Put the wrapped gifts in one pile. Player 1 opens a gift. Each later player opens a new gift or steals an eligible opened one.
- If a gift is stolen, the person left without one chooses again under the same gift rules. Resolve the turn before moving to the next number.
- Offer a prompt from the table when it applies. Passing has no effect on turn order, stealing rights or which gift someone keeps.
- Complete any agreed final swap, then finish with a voluntary toast. Everyone keeps the gift they are holding.
Keep drinks separate from the gift mechanics. No drinking to buy extra steals, no shots for a stolen gift, and no need to finish a drink. If prompts interrupt the exchange, drop them and continue with the gifts.
White Elephant Drinking Game Rules to Share
Bring one wrapped gift within our agreed budget. We draw numbers, then open or steal on our turn. A gift freezes after its third steal, and a turn ends after three steals; the person left without a gift then opens a wrapped one. No immediate stealing back. Player 1 may make one final swap with an unfrozen gift, then we finish.
Drink prompts are optional. Opening a gift invites a toast; losing a gift invites a toast, a sip of your own drink, or a pass. At most one prompt per person per turn. Any drink works. Skipping a prompt changes nothing about your gift or your turn.
This sample uses our suggested gift rules. Replace the limits if your group chooses differently. Copy both paragraphs into your invitation so people can decide whether to join before buying a gift.
White Elephant Without Alcohol
Use the same turns and gifts with tea, sparkling water or a mocktail, or replace every prompt with a spoken toast. Do not make one set of rules for drinkers and another for everyone else. For a workplace, a family group with children, or guests who do not want drink prompts, use the ordinary gift exchange without them.
Is There an Official White Elephant Drinking Game?
There is no single rule set. Some articles add drink prompts to the holiday gift swap; other games use the same White Elephant name for a card game. This page describes the gift exchange version, with our own optional prompts.
